An Indian teenage boy who had a 7-inch tail growing on his buttocks since he was tender.
The deformity has caused him serious pains he said and discomfort over the past years.
The people of his town even worshiped him as a monkey god because of the tail.
His parents hide his flashy tail believing it was good luck charm for him,
But on September 29, the boy went into the government owned hospital Super Specialty Hospital, in Nagpur, Maharashtra, in western India, reporting his tail had become so painful.
It was removed finally by surgeons.
The deformity is medically called neuro-development abnormality –which arises from compression at the end of the back.
The deformity can be medically detected soon after birth and can be removed on detection– but in his case the family hide it.
Dr Pramod Giri, the leader of the neurosurgery department, at the hospital, said to the media: ‘This is a rare deformity and we have not seen such a condition here before.
‘He was admitted only after he said of pains in his lower back, pains while sleeping and sitting. The teenager suffered from an extreme psychological issue owing to the tail growing so need to always adjust the tail in his clothes when sitting.’
‘The family was aware but they chose to ignore it and did not consult a doctor as they had superstitious belief about it and considered it to be a good luck charm for the teenager. They hid his deformity all these years worrying about the social stigma and also because it never created any health issue for him until now.’
‘The surgery is not difficult but as it involves some part of the spinal cord we had to be careful. Fortunately, there was no bone or muscular tissue in the boy’s tail, so removing it was no big deal.’
The teenager will soon be discharged later this week.
‘He is happy. He is now comfortable while sleeping and sitting. He says he is more confident about himself now,’
